How air conditioning works
Air conditioning works by circulating refrigerant through coils. The evaporator coil absorbs heat indoors, while the condenser coil releases it outdoors via compression and expansion, creating cooler air indoors.
Indoor Unit
These units are positioned at an elevated level, ensuring an even distribution of air throughout the room. They operate quietly, ensuring that your sleep or enjoyment of your favorite Netflix show remains undisturbed.
Outdoor Unit
These units extract heat from the indoor space and expel it outdoors. The outdoor component can be mounted on an external wall, placed on a roof or balcony, or situated on the ground within your property, such as in a garden.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I know if my air conditioning isn’t working properly?
-
There are various warning signs that your air conditioning is not working correctly and will need a repair or service. These include:
Warm air – if your unit is blowing out warm air, first check your thermostat is switched to cooling mode and set it to lower than the current inside temperature. If the unit is still blowing warm air, it is likely you’ll need an engineer visit.
Water leakage – any water leaking from an air conditioning unit will need immediate attention, as it could damage the equipment, as well as your property. From clogged drain lines to general maintenance neglect, there could be all sorts of reasons for this issue.
Strange noises – an air conditioning system is designed to be quiet in operation, so a clear sign that you need a repair or service visit is when it starts to make noises. Sounds such as screeching, banging and clicking could all indicate loose parts or clogged debris that need to be attended to.
Unpleasant odours – no air conditioning unit should emit unpleasant odours, so if you detect something that smells mouldy, musty or like burning, be sure to switch off the system and call out an air conditioning repair engineer without delay. Sometimes something as simple as changing the filters could be the answer, but in other cases it may be more serious.
Higher energy bills – if your energy bills are unusually high following the use of your air conditioning system then it could be that the equipment is not working as efficiently as it should. This could be down to a build-up of dust and debris which puts a strain on the components, making them work harder to output the same amount of airflow and so increasing energy usage.
Please do contact us without delay at [email protected] or call us on 0203-4888-663 if you are experiencing any of the above problems. It could be that we are able to guide you with some straightforward checks that could potentially resolve your issue quickly, without the need for us to attend your home or business premises for an air conditioning repair. Barnet Climate Control is happy to offer this as part of our value-added service. -
How quickly can you attend my air conditioning repair callout?
-
Depending on where you are based, we will usually aim to attend your air conditioning repair within 24-48 hours. Most of the time we will be able to provide a solution within our first hour onsite, and if we need to order new parts, we’ll advise a clear timescale.
If you are on one of our air conditioning maintenance plans, you will receive a priority service and 24/7 rapid reactions should your system fail. -
Should I invest in regular air conditioning servicing?
-
One of the main reasons an air conditioning repair becomes necessary is inadequate maintenance. Allowing filters and coils to become dirty puts a strain on the system, often leading to poorly functioning or completely non-operational components.
In order to avoid this and improve the reliability of your system, regular servicing is highly recommended, the frequency of which will depend on how often the equipment is used.
For residential air conditioning, Barnet Climate Control recommends an annual service. For commercial installations used daily, we suggest a service visit around 3-4 times per year.
Regular servicing helps reduce the need for emergency air conditioning repairs, as well as making it more energy efficient.
