Frequently Asked Questions
-
How often should my Hoshizaki ice machine be serviced and why is it so important?
-
All commercial refrigeration equipment, including ice machines, needs continuous care. Settings need to be calibrated on a regular basis, electrical components and thermometers inspected frequently, and checks carried out for gas leaks.
Not many businesses will have the in-house expertise – or time – to ensure all these requirements are adhered to. And if something is ignored, it could result in operational problems with the ice machine, which could translate into potential health and safety breaches.
Without regular servicing, emergency callouts are likely to increase, and your Hoshizaki ice machine may not be as energy efficient as it could be, so could cost more to run. There’s also the risk of unexpectedly finding yourself unable to provide ice for patrons’ drinks.
We recommend a routine Hoshizaki ice machine maintenance visit once every six months.
It’s also important to service any water softeners or filters associated with the ice machine’s water supply, in line with the relevant manufacturers’ instructions. Make sure you keep records of all servicing and maintenance, as you may be asked to present them in the event of an issue arising.
-
Why do ice machines need regular cleaning?
-
All ice makers, including Hoshizaki ice machines, must be cleaned frequently to keep them in optimal working order. Cleaning is also important to ensure the ice is safe for consumption and doesn’t leave an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Lack of cleaning can allow limescale to build up, and mould and bacteria to develop within the ice machine. Both can contaminate the ice, placing customers at risk of illness from the likes of E.coli or salmonella.
Ice is considered food under UK food legislation, which means its handling must form part of the establishment’s food safety management system. This system must include ensuring the cleanliness and condition of the equipment used to dispense the ice.
Hoshizaki ice machines should undergo a deep clean at least once a year. However, in hard water areas, or where the machine is subject to heavy usage, a higher frequency is recommended.
Signs that your ice machine is in need of a service include:
• Misshapen ice
• Bad-smelling ice
• Misty ice
• Lowered ice production
• Ice not forming properlyIf you are experiencing any of these problems, we recommend you get in touch with our team without delay on [email protected] or call us on 0203-4888-663.
